About Kunta Kinteh Island, River Gambia

Kunta Kinteh Island, once called James Island, is a tiny island in the River Gambia, about 30 kilometres upstream from the capital, Banjul. European traders built a fort here in the 17th century, and for about 150 years it was one of the places from which enslaved Africans were shipped across the Atlantic. Today the ruins of the fort, together with the nearby villages of Albreda and Juffureh, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2011 the island was renamed after Kunta Kinte, the man from Juffureh whose story Alex Haley told in his book Roots. This photo shows the island's ruined fort among old baobab trees, surrounded by the wide river.

Puzzle tip: start with the ruined fort and the baobab trees, then the green water, and the pale sky last.
