About Wassu Stone Circles

The Wassu stone circles, in the centre of the Gambia, belong to the Senegambian stone circles, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest group of stone circles in the world: more than a thousand of them stand in a band along the River Gambia in the Gambia and Senegal. They were raised over many centuries, probably between the 3rd century BC and the 16th century AD, from blocks of laterite, a hard red stone, and many mark ancient graves. Some stones are more than two metres tall. This photo shows a circle of rough reddish standing stones on dry ground, with trees behind.

Puzzle tip: start with the standing stones, then the trees behind them, and the dry ground and the sky last.
