About Gambia
The river has been the country's main road for centuries, and its banks hold reminders of a painful past: Kunta Kinteh Island was one of the places from which enslaved Africans were shipped across the Atlantic. The Gambia became independent from Britain in 1965 and is often called the Smiling Coast of Africa. It is also one of the best places in West Africa for birdwatching.
You can put together fishing boats on the river, a canoe in the mangroves, Kunta Kinteh Island, a winding creek near Banjul, floating lodges, a donkey cart on the beach and the Wassu stone circles.
