About Monumental Arch of Palmyra

Palmyra grew rich as an oasis city in the Syrian Desert, where caravans stopped on the trade route between the Persian Gulf and the Mediterranean. In the 3rd century its queen, Zenobia, broke away from Rome and for a few years ruled an empire stretching from Egypt to Anatolia. The Monumental Arch stood at a bend of the city's great colonnaded street, hiding the change of direction. It was destroyed in 2015; this photo shows it as it stood before. Palmyra has been a World Heritage Site since 1980.

Puzzle tip: the arch and the columns have clear edges, so build them first; the sky and the desert come last.
