About Öxarárfoss Waterfall, Þingvellir

Öxarárfoss falls in a single drop over the dark lava wall of the Almannagjá gorge at Þingvellir. According to old tradition, the river Öxará was turned by the early settlers so that it would flow down into the assembly field and give water to the thousands of people who camped there each summer during the Althing. Its name means the waterfall of the axe river. In winter the falls often freeze into columns of ice. This photo shows the white water dropping over black basalt and then rushing between dark boulders.

Puzzle tip: start with the white waterfall and the water among the rocks, then the dark lava walls and the sky.
