About Painted Wooden Balconies, Valletta

Closed wooden balconies, called gallariji in Maltese, are one of the symbols of Malta. They became popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and may have been inspired by the screened windows of North Africa and the Middle East. From inside, families could watch the busy street, catch the sea breeze and stay out of the strong sun without being seen. Each house painted its balcony in its own colour, often green, red, blue or yellow, and today the government helps owners restore them. This photo shows a stone house front covered with bright balconies.

Puzzle tip: group the pieces by balcony colour first, then fill the pale stone wall between them.
