About Pink Sandstone Temple of Banteay Srei

Banteay Srei lies about 25 kilometres north-east of the main temples of Angkor and was consecrated in 967 AD to the Hindu god Shiva. Unlike most Angkor temples it was not built by a king but by a royal adviser, the scholar Yajnavaraha. It is carved from fine pink sandstone, and its walls are covered with some of the most detailed carving in Khmer art, which is why it is often called the jewel of Angkor. The temple is small, with doorways little more than a metre high. This photo shows its decorated towers and gateways surrounded by green trees.

Puzzle tip: start with the pink carved towers in the centre, then fill the green trees and the sky around them.
