About Red Dunes of the Kalahari, Namibia

The Kalahari covers about 900,000 square kilometres of southern Africa, across Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. Its sand is coloured red by a thin coating of iron oxide, the same mineral that gives rust its colour. Strictly speaking it is a semi-desert: it gets more rain than a true desert, so grasses, thorn trees and shrubs grow on its long, parallel dunes. In Namibia the Kalahari begins east of the central highlands, and its red ridges run for hundreds of kilometres.

Puzzle tip: the patterns in the red sand help you match the pieces; the plain sky is the trickiest part.
