About Red Maples in the Forest of Charlevoix

Fall in Charlevoix, on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River in Quebec, brings some of the brightest fall colours in Canada. The region lies inside a huge crater made by a meteorite about four hundred million years ago, which explains its unusual valleys and steep hills. Since 1988 Charlevoix has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve. In this photo red maples, yellow birches and dark green spruces cover a steep slope, with a white birch trunk leaning across the middle of the picture.

Puzzle tip: start with the white birch trunk and the bright red trees, then the green spruces, and finish with the slope at the top.
