About Rice Fields along the Mo Chhu, Punakha Valley

The Punakha Valley lies at about 1,200 metres, much lower and warmer than most of Bhutan, which is why the Zhabdrung chose it for his winter capital. The Mo Chhu, the "Mother River", winds through it, fed by glaciers in the north. Farmers grow two crops a year on its terraced fields, including the red rice that is eaten all over the country. Orange trees, bananas and cactus grow here too. This view follows the river past green paddies and villages towards the hills.

Puzzle tip: the river is a clear guide through the middle; the fields and the hills are easier to sort by colour.
