About Rice Terraces near Sa Pa

Sa Pa is a mountain town in the far north-west of Vietnam, in the Hoang Lien Son range, close to Fansipan, the highest peak in Indochina at 3,143 metres. The French built it as a cool hill station in the early twentieth century, but the valleys around it have long been home to the Hmong, Dao and other peoples. Over generations they have carved the steep slopes into terraces, fed by streams, where rice is planted in spring and harvested in September. In this photo the curved terraces follow every fold of the valley.

Puzzle tip: start with the curved lines of the terraces nearby; the far mountains and the sky come last.
