Ha Long Bay Limestone Islands
Ha Long Bay is dotted with nearly two thousand limestone islands rising from emerald water; its name means where the dragon descends, after a legend of dragons that created the islands to protect the land. In the northern mountains, farmers have carved hillsides into rice terraces, like those of Mu Cang Chai, which turn gold before the harvest.
Hoi An was a busy trading port from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries, visited by Chinese, Japanese and European merchants. Its old town, a World Heritage Site, is famous for silk lanterns, boats on the Thu Bon River and the Japanese Covered Bridge.
