About Shoreline of Nggatokae Island

Nggatokae is a round volcanic island at the south-eastern end of Marovo Lagoon, covered in forest and fringed by coral reefs. Along parts of its coast the sea is slowly eating into the land: palm trees have fallen into the water, and old stumps now stand among the waves. Rising seas and stronger storms are a growing worry across the Solomon Islands, where many villages are built right at the water's edge. The rocks, driftwood and leaning palms of this beach show how quickly a tropical shoreline can change.

Puzzle tip: start with the leaning palm trunks and the dark rocks; the grey sky and the sea are best left for last.
