About St George’s Monastery in Wadi Qelt

St George's Monastery clings to the cliff of Wadi Qelt, a deep desert canyon between Jerusalem and Jericho. Hermits first settled in the caves here in the 4th century, and a monastery was founded around the year 480. Destroyed by Persian invaders in 614 and later abandoned, it was rebuilt by the Greek Orthodox Church between 1878 and 1901 and is still home to a few monks. An old path along the canyon, used by travellers since Roman times, leads to it, past an aqueduct that still carries water from springs.

Puzzle tip: the monastery walls stand out against the rock; the dry cliffs and the green trees below are best sorted by colour.
