About St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall, Orkney

The Orkney Islands, off the north coast of Scotland, were settled by Norwegians in the 9th century and ruled by Norse earls for six hundred years, until they passed to Scotland in 1468. In 1137 Earl Rognvald began St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall in memory of his uncle Magnus, an earl murdered by his cousin and later honoured as a saint. Built of red and yellow sandstone, it is the most northerly cathedral in Britain, and Magnus's bones were found hidden in one of its pillars in 1919. This photo shows the cathedral rising behind the old gravestones of its churchyard.

Puzzle tip: start with the red cathedral and its tower, then the grey gravestones and the green grass in front.
