About Wooden Houses in Old Paramaribo

The historic centre of Paramaribo has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. Its houses were built by the Dutch in the 18th and 19th centuries, but in a local way: white-painted timber walls on red brick foundations, steep roofs and wide verandas that keep the rooms cool in the tropical heat. Fires in 1821 and 1832 destroyed much of the old town, and most of what stands today was rebuilt after them. This photo shows a row of grand wooden houses with white balconies, railings and shuttered windows along a quiet street.

Puzzle tip: start with the white balconies and their railings, then the red bases of the houses and the sky above.
