About Benin
From the 17th to the 19th century the powerful kingdom of Dahomey ruled the south from its capital, Abomey, whose royal palaces are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Benin is also the birthplace of the Vodun religion, which spread with enslaved Africans to Haiti, Brazil and Cuba. France ruled the country until 1960.
You can put together Ganvié, the village on stilts on Lake Nokoué, from the air and from the water, its wooden houses and canoes, a sailing canoe among the reeds and hartebeest at a waterhole in Pendjari National Park.
