About DR Congo
The Kongo, Luba and Lunda kingdoms flourished here long before King Leopold II of Belgium made the land his private colony in 1885, a period of terrible cruelty. Belgium took over the colony in 1908, and the country became independent in 1960. More than 100 million people now live here, speaking hundreds of languages.
You can assemble the glowing lava lake of Mount Nyiragongo and the view into its crater, a mountain gorilla in Virunga National Park, fishermen on Lake Kivu at sunset near Goma, and the town of Bukavu and the green islands of Lake Kivu.
