Brimstone Hill Fortress, Saint Kitts
Brimstone Hill Fortress, built by the British in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries on a steep volcanic hill, is so well designed and preserved that it is a World Heritage Site; it was once known as the Gibraltar of the West Indies.
Green vervet monkeys were brought to the islands by settlers centuries ago and are now common in the forests and even on the beaches. On Nevis, Pinney's Beach stretches below the cloud-covered volcano, and on Saint Kitts, Frigate Bay lies where the island narrows between the Caribbean and the Atlantic.
