About Sierra Leone
Freetown was founded in 1792 as a home for freed slaves, and the Krio language born among them is now spoken across the country. The name Sierra Leone comes from the Portuguese Serra Leoa, the Lion Mountains, the green peaks that rise behind Freetown. The country became independent from Britain in 1961, and its peninsula is lined with some of the finest beaches in West Africa.
You can put together Mount Aureol and the hillside houses of Freetown from above, palms on Tokeh Beach, a canoe and the rocks at River Number 2 and a beach in Freetown.
