Sidi Bou Said, Tunisia
Near the modern capital, Tunis, lie the ruins of Carthage, the great city founded by the Phoenicians that fought Rome for control of the Mediterranean. Further south, the Roman amphitheatre of El Jem, built in the third century, could hold about 35,000 spectators and is one of the best preserved in the world.
The hilltop village of Sidi Bou Said is famous for its white houses with blue doors and windows. In the south, the oasis of Ksar Ghilane lies at the edge of the Grand Erg Oriental, a sea of sand dunes.
