About Boats on a Quiet River, Philippines

Painted wooden boats rest on a quiet green river in the Philippines, shaded by palms and thick tropical plants. In a country of more than 7,000 islands, boats have always been a part of daily life, used for fishing, for carrying goods to market and for crossing between islands. The word barangay, still used today for the smallest unit of local government, comes from balangay, the large wooden boats in which early settlers are said to have arrived.

Puzzle tip: the colourful boats are the easiest pieces; the green water and the leaves are best sorted by light and dark.
