About Thirlmere in Autumn, Lake District

Thirlmere is a long lake in the heart of the Lake District in north-west England, beneath the slopes of Helvellyn. In the 1890s a dam turned it into a reservoir for the city of Manchester, and its water still flows about 150 kilometres south through an aqueduct, carried all the way by gravity alone. The forests planted around it include larches, which turn orange in autumn. The Lake District, with its lakes and fells, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017.

Puzzle tip: the reflections in the lake mirror the hillside, so match them up; the sky is best left for last.
