About Red Roofs and Harbour Piers of Whitby

The old town of Whitby is a tight cluster of cottages and yards on the east bank of the River Esk, below the 199 steps that lead up to the abbey. In the nineteenth century the town was famous for Whitby jet, a black gemstone made from fossil wood, which became fashionable for mourning jewellery after Queen Victoria lost her husband. This view from the steps looks over red tiled roofs and chimneys towards the two harbour piers and their lighthouses, reaching out into the North Sea.

Puzzle tip: start with the chimneys and red roofs, then build the long piers and finish with the sea and sky.
