About Gatún Locks, Panama Canal

The Panama Canal opened in 1914 and cut across the narrow land between the Atlantic and the Pacific, saving ships a long voyage around South America. At the Gatún Locks near Colón, on the Atlantic side, three giant steps lift ships about 26 metres up to Gatún Lake. Small electric locomotives called mules run along the walls and keep each ship in place. Larger new locks were added in 2016.

Puzzle tip: the ships and the lock walls are the key shapes; the water and the sky come next.
