About Otaru Canal in Winter

Otaru, a port on the west coast of Hokkaido, grew rich in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries on herring fishing and trade. Its canal was completed in 1923 so that goods could be carried from ships to the stone warehouses along its bank. When the port declined, part of the canal was saved by local people, and the old warehouses became shops and restaurants. In February the town holds a festival of snow lanterns. This photo shows the canal on a snowy day.

Puzzle tip: start with the stone warehouses on the left, then the canal and the snowy path, and leave the grey sky for last.
