About Shinbashi Street in Gion, Kyoto

Gion is Kyoto's most famous geisha district, where geiko and their apprentices, called maiko, still entertain guests in traditional teahouses. Around Shinbashi Street the old wooden townhouses, with slatted windows and bamboo blinds, are protected as a historic district, and the little Shirakawa stream runs beside the paving under weeping willows. This daytime photo shows the quiet stone-paved street lined with wooden houses and the green branches of the willows.

Puzzle tip: start with the wooden houses on the left, then the willow branches, and finish with the stone paving.
