About Sénanque Abbey and Its Lavender Field

Sénanque Abbey lies in a narrow wooded valley a few kilometres north of the village of Gordes in Provence. It was founded in 1148 by Cistercian monks, who wanted a quiet, simple life of prayer and work far from towns, and its plain stone church has hardly changed since the twelfth century. Because the valley is so narrow, the church faces north instead of east as usual. A small community of monks still lives here and grows the lavender in front of the abbey. In this photo long purple rows lead to the abbey under a sky streaked with thin clouds.

Puzzle tip: start with the abbey and its bell tower, then the trees and hills, and finish with the purple rows and the sky.
