About Gordes on Its Hillside

Gordes is a hilltop village in the Luberon in Provence, built in layers of pale stone houses that wrap around a rocky spur. At the top stand a Renaissance castle, rebuilt in the sixteenth century on older foundations, and the church of Saint-Firmin. In the twentieth century painters such as Marc Chagall and Victor Vasarely came here, and Vasarely had a museum in the castle for many years. Gordes is listed among the most beautiful villages of France. This photo shows the whole village rising above green trees and terraces, with the wide plain behind it.

Puzzle tip: start with the castle and the houses at the top, then the walls and terraces below, and finish with the trees and the sky.
