About Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon above the Lake

The Lake of Sainte-Croix is a reservoir created in the 1970s, when a dam was built on the river Verdon below the gorge. The rising water flooded the old village of Les Salles-sur-Verdon, which was rebuilt higher up on the new shore. Today the lake is about ten kilometres long and is popular for swimming, sailing and pedal boats, and boats with petrol engines are not allowed. The village of Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon sits on a ridge above the water. In this photo its houses crown the hill beyond a wide stretch of blue lake under a summer sky.

Puzzle tip: start with the village on the hill, then the green slopes and the pale shore, and finish with the blue water and the sky.
