About Khor al-Udeid, the Inland Sea

Khor al-Udeid, known as the Inland Sea, lies in the far south-east of Qatar, near the border with Saudi Arabia. Here a long, narrow inlet of the Persian Gulf reaches deep into the desert, so that tall sand dunes run right down to the water's edge, one of the few places in the world where this happens. There are no roads, and visitors cross the dunes by four-wheel drive. The area is a protected nature reserve, home to birds such as flamingos and to dugongs and turtles in the shallow water.

Puzzle tip: the line where the dunes meet the water is the best start; the sand ripples and the sky need patience.
