About Village on the Amazon River, Peru

Many villages along the Amazon are built for a river that rises and falls by several metres every year. Houses stand on stilts or float on rafts of logs, and in the wet season the water reaches right up to the doorsteps. Children paddle to school, and floating shops and clinics travel from village to village. Life follows the river in other ways too: fishing, farming on the fertile banks when the water is low, and trade with the larger towns downstream. This aerial picture shows a row of floating houses moored on the brown water at the edge of the forest.

Puzzle tip: the row of houses with their pale roofs is the best place to start; the brown water has its wake lines as clues.
