About Pink Beach on Padar Island

Komodo National Park is one of the few places in the world with pink beaches. Their colour comes from tiny fragments of red coral and the red shells of foraminifera, single-celled sea creatures, mixed with the white sand. The effect is strongest at the water's edge and when the sand is wet. Padar's pink beach lies in one of the island's quieter bays, and the reef just offshore is good for snorkelling. In this aerial photo a long strip of pale pink sand separates the turquoise shallows from the green hills.

Puzzle tip: start with the long pink beach that crosses the picture; the reef patterns in the water come next.
