About Coast of São Vicente from the Air

São Vicente is a small, dry and mountainous island, and it was almost empty until the 1800s, when its deep natural bay became a coaling station for steamships crossing the Atlantic. The port town of Mindelo grew up around it and is now the cultural capital of Cape Verde. Away from the town, the island's brown volcanic hills drop to the sea, and long sandy beaches line the windy north and east coasts. From the air the colours are striking: rust-brown rock, a thin line of white surf and deep blue water. This photo shows a curving beach at the foot of steep, bare ridges.

Puzzle tip: the white surf line is a natural edge to follow; the open sea is a wide area of similar blue.
