About Wistman's Wood on Dartmoor

Wistman's Wood is a small, ancient oak wood high on Dartmoor, in Devon in south-west England, in the valley of the West Dart River. Its oaks are stunted and twisted by the wind and grow among huge granite boulders covered in thick moss, ferns and lichens, so that it looks like a forest from a fairy tale. It is one of the last fragments of the woods that once covered parts of the moor. Old legends say that the Wisht Hounds, ghostly black dogs, hunt here at night. In this photo mossy branches spread over the green boulders.

Puzzle tip: the brown branches give a structure to follow; the many greens of the moss take the longest.
