About Tsarevets Fortress, Veliko Tarnovo

Tsarevets is a fortified hill in Veliko Tarnovo, almost surrounded by a loop of the Yantra River. From 1185 to 1393 it was the heart of the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, with the royal palace and the Patriarch's church inside its walls, until the city fell to the Ottomans. The walls and the gate towers have been partly rebuilt, and the Patriarchal Cathedral on the summit was restored in 1981 and painted inside with bold modern murals. On some evenings a sound-and-light show lights up the whole hill. This photo shows the fortress walls and the church on top of the green hill.

Puzzle tip: start with the church on the summit, then follow the stone walls down the hill through the trees.
