About Hippos in Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru lies on the floor of the Great Rift Valley and is the centre of Lake Nakuru National Park. Since about 2010 heavy rains have raised its level by several metres, flooding the old shoreline, drowning trees and making the water less salty. That change has made the lake friendlier to hippos and fish, though fewer flamingos now gather here than before. Hippos spend the day in the water to keep cool and come out at night to graze, walking several kilometres. This photo shows a group of hippos resting in the lake below green hills.

Puzzle tip: start with the green trees and hills, then the grey hippos, and fill the water last.
