About Rapids on the Suriname River near Nieuw Aurora

Above the great lake of Brokopondo, the Suriname River flows through the rainforest past the villages of the Saamaka, one of the Maroon peoples of Suriname. Their ancestors were Africans who escaped from the coastal plantations in the 17th and 18th centuries and built free communities deep in the forest; in 1762 the Saamaka won a peace treaty from the Dutch. Along this stretch the river runs over shelves of rock in shallow rapids, which boats must carefully work their way around. This photo shows white water rushing over flat brown rocks below tall, green forest.

Puzzle tip: start with the white rapids and the brown rocks, then the green trees and the blue sky above them.
