About Carved Pumpkins in Jönköping

Jönköping lies at the southern tip of Vättern, Sweden's second largest lake. In the nineteenth century the town became famous for making safety matches, and its old match factory is now a museum. Halloween became popular in Sweden in the late 1990s, and it falls close to All Saints' Day, when Swedes visit cemeteries in the evening and light candles on the graves. This photo from Jönköping shows three carved pumpkins with grinning faces, set out as Halloween decorations.

Puzzle tip: start with the carved eyes and mouths, then build the round pumpkins outwards and add the background last.
