About Turf Church at the Commonwealth Farm, Þjórsárdalur

Þjóðveldisbærinn, in the Þjórsárdalur valley of southern Iceland, is a reconstruction of a farm from the time of the Icelandic Commonwealth, the free state founded by Norse settlers. It is based on the ruins of the farm of Stöng, which was buried in ash when the volcano Hekla erupted in 1104. Icelanders built with thick walls and roofs of turf, which kept the houses warm in a land with few trees. The farm was built in 1974 for the 1,100th anniversary of the settlement. This photo shows its little church, with a wooden gable and turf walls, beside a waterfall.

Puzzle tip: start with the wooden gable and the turf walls, then the waterfall, the green slopes and the sky.
