About Jarlshof Norse Settlement, Shetland

Jarlshof, at Sumburgh on the southern tip of Shetland, holds more than 4,000 years of history in one place. Storms in the late 19th century uncovered layer after layer of homes: Bronze Age houses, an Iron Age tower and wheelhouses, the longhouses of Norse settlers who arrived in the 9th century, a medieval farm and the ruined house of a 16th-century laird. The name Jarlshof, meaning the earl's hall, was invented by the novelist Walter Scott in 1822. Shetland stayed Norwegian until 1469. This photo shows the stone ruins on green grass, with the roofless laird's house behind.

Puzzle tip: start with the ruined stone house at the back, then the low stone walls and the green grass in front.
