About Azulejo Tiles, Lisbon

Azulejos are painted ceramic tiles that cover walls, churches, stations and houses all over Portugal. The art came from the Moors, who ruled much of the Iberian Peninsula for centuries, and it reached a golden age in Lisbon in the 17th and 18th centuries. The tiles are decorative but also practical, keeping buildings cool and protecting them from damp, and Lisbon even has a National Tile Museum.

Puzzle tip: the tile pattern repeats, so pay attention to the edges of each tile and the small details inside it.
