About Fishing in the Sudd Wetland

The Sudd is a vast swamp of papyrus, reeds and open water in the middle of South Sudan, where the White Nile spreads out over a flat plain. In the rainy season it can grow larger than many European countries. Its name comes from the Arabic word for barrier, because floating islands of plants long blocked boats travelling up the Nile. Millions of birds, fish and antelopes live here, and the Dinka and Nuer people fish its waters and graze cattle at its edges. This photo shows a fisherman with his catch in a dugout canoe.

Puzzle tip: start with the fisherman and his canoe, then the fish he holds, and the grey water and the sky last.
