About Amsterdam Canal Houses

Amsterdam's narrow, gabled canal houses were built by merchants during the city's 17th-century Golden Age, when it was one of the busiest ports in the world. Many still have a beam and hook at the top of the gable, used to hoist furniture and goods up to the upper floors. This row stands on the Damrak, photographed at blue hour with its lights reflected in the water.
