About Lion Gate of Mycenae

The Lion Gate, built around 1250 BC, was the main entrance to the citadel of Mycenae, in the Peloponnese. Above its great stone lintel two lionesses stand on either side of a column: the oldest large carved sculpture in Europe. In Homer’s poems Mycenae was the city of King Agamemnon, who led the Greeks to Troy. Its walls are made of blocks so huge that later Greeks believed the one-eyed giants, the Cyclopes, had built them. In 1876 Heinrich Schliemann found graves full of gold here, with a gold mask he called the Mask of Agamemnon, though it is in fact older.

Puzzle tip: start with the lions above the doorway; the big stones of the walls come next, and the sky goes last.
