Above Athens stands the Acropolis, a rocky hill crowned by the Parthenon, the temple built for the goddess Athena in the fifth century BC. Beside it you will find the Erechtheion with its six stone maidens, the Caryatids, and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a Roman theatre still used for concerts. Below the hill, the narrow lanes of Plaka are the oldest neighbourhood of the city.
Santorini is the rim of a volcano that erupted about 3,600 years ago. Its village of Oia is known for white houses and blue-domed churches perched above the flooded crater.
