About Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion

The Temple of Poseidon, god of the sea, was built around 440 BC on the cliffs of Cape Sounion, at the southern tip of Attica, about 60 metres above the water. Sailors coming home to Athens saw its white columns long before the city. Legend says that King Aegeus stood here waiting for his son Theseus to return from Crete; when he saw a black sail, he thought his son was dead and threw himself into the sea, which has been called the Aegean ever since. The poet Lord Byron is said to have carved his name on one of the columns.

Puzzle tip: start with the columns of the temple; the rocks and the sea come next, and the clouds go last.
