About Olive Trees in Ancient Olympia

For more than a thousand years, from 776 BC, athletes from all over the Greek world came to Olympia every four years to compete in honour of Zeus. During the games a sacred truce allowed people to travel safely to the sanctuary. Winners received a crown of leaves cut from a wild olive tree that grew near the Temple of Zeus. The site lies in a green valley in the western Peloponnese, and the Olympic flame for every modern Games is still lit here by the rays of the sun. In this photo old olive trees shade the stone foundations, with the columns of the Philippeion behind.

Puzzle tip: the low stone foundations in front form clear steps; the trees and the columns behind come next.
