About Maputo and Its Bay from Above

Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, lies on a large bay of the Indian Ocean near the border with South Africa. Under Portuguese rule it was called Lourenço Marques, after a 16th-century trader who explored the bay, and it took its present name in 1976, after independence. Many of its wide avenues, lined with jacaranda and flame trees, are named after revolutionary leaders such as Karl Marx, Lenin and Mao Zedong. In 2018 the Maputo–Katembe Bridge opened across the bay, then the longest suspension bridge in Africa. In this aerial photo the city's apartment blocks stretch towards the bridge and the water.

Puzzle tip: begin with the tall white buildings in front; the hazy bay and the sky are best left for last.
