About Matsumoto Castle and the Japanese Alps

Matsumoto lies in a wide basin surrounded by the Japanese Alps, the mountain ranges that run through the middle of Honshu. On clear days in winter and spring their snowy peaks rise behind the castle, as in this photo. The black and white keep stands above its stone base and moat, with pine trees on the bank. The castle was saved from demolition in the 1870s by local citizens, who raised money to buy it when many old castles were being torn down.

Puzzle tip: start with the black and white castle keep, then the stone wall and pine trees, and finish with the snowy mountains.
